Aesthetics and Functionality: Sara’s Case with Blepharoplasty and Ptosis

Patients often come to us complaining of a tired and heavy gaze, attributing the problem solely to excess skin. However, to achieve an optimal and long-lasting result, aesthetics must always go hand-in-hand with functionality. Today we look at the clinical case of Sara, a patient who opted for a combined surgery to resolve both a visual and aesthetic discomfort.

The Difference Between Aesthetics and Function In Sara’s case, we had two main goals: removing the excess skin and lifting the eyelid to “uncover” the eye. It is crucial to understand the distinct difference between these two surgical procedures and why they are so often combined.

On one hand, upper blepharoplasty is the aesthetic procedure aimed at removing the excess skin that weighs down the gaze. However, removing skin alone is not enough to “open” an eye whose musculature is weakened. For this reason, we combined it with an eyelid ptosis correction, a strictly functional intervention that addresses the levator muscle of the eyelid to restore its proper height and function.

Symptoms and Post-Operative Recovery Before the surgery, the drooping eyelid and excess skin physically “closed” Sara’s eye. This defect caused a constant sense of heaviness and an annoying limitation of her lateral visual field.

Just a month and a half after the surgery, the results are excellent. Her situation has improved in every aspect. Functionally, her peripheral vision has been fully restored, and the bothersome eyelid weight has completely disappeared. Aesthetically, her gaze appears distinctly rejuvenated and fresh, naturally and harmoniously enhancing her beautiful blue-green eyes.
