Thyroid Eye Disease: Carlotta’s Story and the Oculoplastic Surgery That Changed Her Gaze

Thyroid eye disease can significantly alter both the appearance and functionality of the eyes, sometimes to the point of making a person almost unrecognizable.

Bulging, protruding eyes, swollen eyelids, dryness, burning, and visual difficulties: these are symptoms that, as in Carlotta’s case, affect not only aesthetics but also daily life and personal relationships.

Carlotta’s testimony

“My eyes changed shape, my gaze changed, and even the way I related to the world,” Carlotta explains. “Looking in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I decided to undergo surgery because seeing other patients with successful outcomes gave me the strength and courage to do it too.”

In addition to the aesthetic aspect, Carlotta suffered from functional issues: dryness, burning, excessive tearing, swelling, and disturbed sleep.

The surgery

To restore harmony to her gaze and improve eye health, we decided on a complete surgical procedure in a single session:

– orbital bone and fat decompression
– correction of upper eyelid retraction
– correction of lower scleral show
– upper and lower blepharoplasty

The outcome

The surgery not only reduced the protruding, bulging appearance of her eyes but also relieved the functional problems associated with the disease.
“I am very happy I did it,” Carlotta concludes, “because my quality of life has truly improved so much.”
