Undergoing eye surgery at a young age can be daunting, but with the right minimally invasive techniques and a highly specialized approach, the results can be life-changing and the recovery remarkably swift. Today, we review the case of a 17-year-old patient who recently underwent a combined procedure: bilateral eyelid ptosis correction and canthopexy.
This young patient came to us experiencing a dual issue that affected both his visual function and the aesthetic harmony of his face. Firstly, his upper eyelids were visibly drooping, making his eyes appear partially closed and tired. Secondly, his lower eyelids were positioned too low, revealing a significant amount of the “white” of the eye beneath the iris—a structural condition commonly referred to as scleral show.
To restore the natural openness and proportion of his gaze, we developed a customized surgical plan. The procedure involved an eyelid ptosis correction to lift the upper eyelids and open the eyes fully. Simultaneously, we performed a canthopexy accompanied by the release of the lower eyelid retractors. This delicate technique is crucial for elevating the lower eyelid, correcting the excessive white exposure, and restoring the proper anatomical position of the eyelid margin.
At just ten days post-surgery, the healing process is already remarkable. As seen during the follow-up visit to remove the minimal sutures (just one knot and two stitches per eye), the patient has absolutely no bruising and is progressing extremely well.
This rapid post-operative recovery highlights the precision of modern oculoplastic surgery. The primary goal of Dr. Francesco Bernardini is not merely cosmetic enhancement, but the full restoration of eye function and natural appearance. Thanks to this dual approach, our young patient’s eyes have regained their proper shape, position, and function. He can see better, and his eyes look naturally beautiful.
